At HMI, we value fresh perspectives and invest in the education and career development of our team, especially our youth apprentices and interns. Today, we are excited to introduce one of our talented interns, Cordell Komorowski, and share his journey and experiences with us.
Tell Us About Yourself
My name is Cordell Komorowski. I am currently attending NWTC for project management and I am enrolled in the project management technical degree as well as the manufacturing operations management associate degree. I started college in the summer of 2024 and I am expected to graduate in 2026.
Outside of school and work, I enjoy hunting, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, camping, going to movies, hanging out with family, and most of all, spending time with my girlfriend. Additionally, I am part of a Delta Waterfowl organization that focuses on conserving wildlife habitat for ducks and building wood duck houses to help the duck population in the Green Bay area grow.
Internship Experience at HMI
I work as a Youth Apprentice Project Manager at HMI. I chose to intern at HMI because I wanted to pursue a career in construction. My role involves managing the work being done in the office and gaining insights into all aspects of the job. A typical day for me starts with handling emails, asking and answering various questions, and sometimes visiting job sites to better understand the work. I also handle material orders and manage the financial aspects of the projects assigned to me. Some of the projects I have worked on include Associated Bank, Green Bay West High School, and St. Mary’s Immaculate Conception. During my time here, I have honed my problem-solving skills, communication, management, leadership, time management, and organizational skills.
Impact on Career Goals
Initially, I aspired to pursue a career in architecture. However, during my internship, I had the opportunity to observe and learn about the role of a project manager. I found myself drawn to the responsibilities and tasks involved in project management, leading me to make the decision to pursue this path instead of architecture. One of the most important insights I gained from this experience is the correlation between how you treat people and your level of success. I learned that by treating others with respect, I can gain their support and collaboration, enhancing the likelihood of accomplishing project goals.
Can you share a memorable moment or achievement from your internship?
“A memorable moment would be when I got my first project to run. My first one was Associated Bank on Oneida Street. I was both nervous and excited to run my first project, and there were 1,000 things running through my mind on what to do to help the project succeed. Once I got into it, I saw that I had nothing to be worried about, and it was going a lot better than I thought it would.”
Future Aspirations and Advice
During my internship, I will be attending school to become a project manager. Once the internship concludes, I intend to pursue a full-time position as a project manager at HMI. I believe that this opportunity will provide me with valuable insights into the daily responsibilities of a project manager and will help me determine if this career path aligns with my aspirations. Additionally, this experience is teaching me various strategies and techniques that will enable me to become a more effective project manager in the future.
What advice would you give to future interns at Hurckman Mechanical?
“I would say to just take it slow and soak in all the information that you can. There is a lot to comprehend about being a project manager, and it can be very overwhelming. By taking it slow, one piece at a time, it will allow you to know everything you need to know. Going to job sites to visualize what you are actually doing helps a lot more than someone would think. This helps you visualize putting the plan to the job site.”
